Best Phone Systems for Auto Repair Shops

A missed call at an auto repair shop is almost always a customer with a car that doesn’t run. That makes your phone system one of the highest-stakes pieces of equipment you own — after-hours breakdown calls, tow-in requests, and repair status updates all flow through it. This guide compares five business phone systems for independent auto repair shops, using published pricing, feature documentation, and aggregated review scores checked in September 2026.

How we evaluated

This research is documentation-based. We did not install or hands-on test any of these systems. We compared each provider on:

  • Published starting price — per-user, per-month pricing from the vendor’s own pages where readable; third-party reporting is clearly labeled where the vendor’s pricing page couldn’t be read.
  • Shop-relevant features — after-hours call routing, missed-call text-back, two-way SMS for repair status updates, mobile app quality, call recording, and multi-line/auto-attendant handling.
  • Shop-management integrations — we only credit integrations (such as Tekmetric or Shop-Ware) verified on official provider or partner pages.
  • Review scores — G2 ratings with review counts, as a proxy for real-world user satisfaction.

Quick comparison

Provider Best for Starting price Free trial G2 rating

Ooma Office Budget-conscious small shops $19.95/user/month (Essentials, billed monthly, no contract) 30-day free trial 4.5/5 (about 130 reviews)
RingCentral RingEX Shops on Tekmetric or running multiple bays $20/user/month (annual billing) — see pricing note 14-day trial (up to 20 lines) 4.2/5 (about 1,440 reviews)
Dialpad AI call transcription on a budget $15/user/month (annual billing) 14-day free trial 4.4/5 (about 4,180 reviews)
Zoom Phone Lowest-cost entry for Zoom users $10.50/user/month (Metered, annual billing) — see pricing note Zoom has advertised a 7-day trial on its Unlimited plan; availability varies 4.6/5 (about 2,670 reviews)

Pricing note: RingCentral’s and Zoom’s own pricing pages are JavaScript-gated and could not be read directly, so their prices above reflect widely reported 2026 figures from third-party sources, not independently verified official pricing. Verify on each vendor’s site before signing up. All prices checked September 2026.

Nextiva

Nextiva’s Core plan starts at $15 per user per month with annual billing, bundling voice, video, chat, and SMS in the NextivaONE app. Every plan includes an auto attendant with call menus, unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada, voicemail-to-email, and a mobile app for advisors who are out on the lot. Core includes 100 business SMS per user per month — enough for appointment reminders and “your car is ready” texts at a small shop.

For repair shops, two things stand out. First, call recording and AI voicemail transcription arrive on the Engage tier ($25 per user per month annually) — useful when you want a record of what was authorized over the phone, a common source of disputes in auto repair. Second, Nextiva is known for its 24/7 phone, chat, and email support, which reviewers consistently cite as a strength (G2 4.5/5 across about 3,600 reviews). The downside: there is no free trial, only a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Verdict: Best for shops that want strong human support and one app for calls, texts, and video. Visit Nextiva

Ooma Office

Ooma Office starts at $19.95 per user per month for Essentials with month-to-month billing and no contract — taxes and regulatory fees are bundled into the quoted price. Essentials includes a virtual receptionist (auto-attendant), unlimited domestic calling in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, and a mobile app.

The catch for shops: SMS texting, call recording, and the desktop app start on the Pro plan at $24.95 per user per month (250 texts per month). Since texting customers about repair status is nearly essential in this industry, most shops should budget for Pro, not Essentials. Ooma also offers an AI Answering Service add-on that can respond to missed calls, plus “shift-to-text” capability. Ooma holds a G2 rating of 4.5/5 and offers a 30-day free trial. A one-time $49.95 activation fee applies.

Verdict: Best budget option for small shops that want predictable monthly billing — but factor in Pro for texting. Visit Ooma

RingCentral RingEX

RingCentral’s Core plan is widely reported at $20 per user per month with annual billing (its own pricing page is JavaScript-gated, so treat this figure as third-party reporting). Core includes unlimited domestic calling, SMS and MMS, an IVR/auto-receptionist, and video conferencing. Automatic call recording requires the Advanced tier (reported around $25 per user per month annually).

This is the most interesting option for auto repair specifically: in April 2026, Tekmetric announced Tekmetric Phones, which integrates with RingCentral (currently in beta). It surfaces customer and vehicle history when the phone rings and links calls to customer profiles, repair orders, and appointments inside Tekmetric. No other provider on this list has a verified shop-management integration — we could not verify any official Shop-Ware, Shopmonkey, or Mitchell 1 integration for any of the five providers.

On missed calls: RingCentral does not ship a native one-click missed-call text-back; its workflow automator offers a documented “send an SMS when you miss a call” recipe, which is a do-it-yourself setup rather than a built-in feature. G2 rating: 4.2/5 (about 1,440 reviews). A 14-day trial with up to 20 lines is available.

Verdict: Best for shops already on Tekmetric, or those that want the most capable routing and call-handling platform. Visit RingCentral

Dialpad

Dialpad Connect’s Standard plan is $15 per user per month with annual billing ($27 month-to-month), with a one-user minimum — a solo shop owner can start without buying empty seats. Even the entry plan includes AI-powered real-time transcription and call summaries, manual call recording, unlimited U.S./Canada calling, and a multi-level auto-attendant.

Limitations for shops: Standard allows 250 SMS per account per month — low for a shop that texts every customer — and only three ring groups. Pro ($25 per user per month annually, 3-user minimum) adds 25 ring groups, automatic call recording, and CRM integrations such as Salesforce and HubSpot. Support on Standard is web and chat only (24/5), not 24/7 phone support. G2 rating: 4.4/5 (about 4,180 reviews). A 14-day free trial is available.

Verdict: Best for shops that want AI call summaries and transcripts at the lowest price. Watch the SMS allowance. Visit Dialpad

Zoom Phone

Zoom Phone is the cheapest entry point on this list: the U.S. & Canada Metered plan is widely reported at $10.50 per user per month (annual billing), with the Unlimited plan at $16 per user per month — again, third-party reporting, since Zoom’s own pricing page is JavaScript-gated. The Unlimited plan includes unlimited domestic calling, SMS/MMS, call queues, multi-level auto-attendants, voicemail transcription, and AI Companion summaries.

For shops, the appeal is simplicity: if your team already uses Zoom, the phone app lives in the same interface staff already know, and the mobile app is well-regarded (G2 4.6/5 across about 2,670 reviews — the highest score on this list). Caveats: the Metered plan charges roughly $0.03 per minute for outbound calls, so it only fits low-outbound lines; and we could not verify any official shop-management integration for Zoom Phone.

Verdict: Best ultra-low-cost option for shops already living in the Zoom ecosystem. Check metered vs. unlimited carefully. Visit Zoom

What to look for in a phone system for your auto repair shop

After-hours and emergency routing. Breakdown calls don’t stop at 5 p.m. You need time-of-day routing that sends after-hours calls to an on-call tech’s mobile or to voicemail with a tow-service message. All five providers offer an auto-attendant or IVR with scheduling.

Two-way SMS for status updates. “Your car is ready” texts cut down on inbound calls. Check the monthly SMS allowance against your repair-order volume: Dialpad’s 250-account-messages-per-month on Standard can run out fast, while Ooma Pro Plus offers 1,000 and Nextiva Engage offers 500 per user.

Missed-call follow-up. A customer who gets no answer often calls the next shop. No provider here offers a verified native one-click missed-call text-back; Ooma has an AI Answering Service add-on and shift-to-text, and RingCentral can do it via a workflow recipe. Ask each vendor exactly how this works before you buy.

Call recording. Recorded calls protect you in “you said it would cost $200” disputes. Only Dialpad includes recording (manual) on its cheapest plan; the others gate it behind mid-tier plans.

Shop-management integration. Beyond the Tekmetric–RingCentral beta, no provider on this list has a verified native integration with Shop-Ware, Shopmonkey, Mitchell 1, or similar platforms. Don’t assume screen-pops exist — verify with the vendor.

Mobile app quality. Your advisors and techs are rarely at a desk. Every provider here ships iOS and Android apps; Zoom Phone and Nextiva score highest with reviewers for app experience.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a phone system cost for a small auto repair shop?

For a three-person shop, expect roughly $30–$75 per month total on entry plans (Zoom Phone Metered or Dialpad Standard at the low end), or $60–$100 per month if you need texting and call recording (Ooma Pro, Nextiva Engage, or RingCentral Advanced). Prices checked September 2026; taxes, fees, and hardware can add to the bill.

Which phone system integrates with Tekmetric?

RingCentral. Tekmetric announced Tekmetric Phones in April 2026, which works alongside RingCentral to surface customer and vehicle history on incoming calls and link calls to repair orders. It is currently in beta. We could not verify any official Tekmetric integration for Nextiva, Ooma, Dialpad, or Zoom Phone.

Do any of these integrate with Shop-Ware?

Not that we could verify. We found no official, documented integration between Shop-Ware and any of the five providers compared here. If Shop-Ware integration is a requirement, ask each vendor directly and get it in writing.

Can these systems text customers when a car is ready?

Yes — all five support two-way business SMS, though allowances differ by plan. Nextiva Core includes 100 SMS per user per month, Ooma Pro includes 250 per month, and Dialpad Standard includes 250 per account per month. Confirm your plan’s allowance covers your monthly repair-order volume.

Will the system answer after hours?

All five offer auto-attendants with after-hours routing: calls can go to voicemail, an on-call mobile, or a custom message (for example, directing tow requests to a separate number). Ooma also sells an AI Answering Service add-on that can interact with callers when nobody picks up.

The bottom line

For most independent auto repair shops, the shortlist is Ooma Office Pro (predictable billing, texting included, $24.95/user/month), Nextiva (best support, all-in-one app, $15/user/month annually), or RingCentral RingEX (best choice if you run Tekmetric). Dialpad is the value play for AI transcripts, and Zoom Phone is the cheapest entry if your team already uses Zoom. Verify pricing and trial availability on each vendor’s site — all figures here were checked September 2026.
